Setting Goals
Long story short, setting goals increases motivation. Feeling unproductive? Thinking your not making any progress at work/school/home? We tend to think the way to address these concerns is to...get motivated. Well, we can't just snap our fingers and increase motivation. We can however set intentions and create realistic goals that will trigger our intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Keep reading for tips on setting goals and intentions.
Take it personal
Start off by looking at the big picture of what you want to do with your life. WHo do want to be in let's say 10 years. These are the large-scale, overarching themes of what you want to accomplish.
You can break down these larger scale goals into smaller and smaller, tangible goals. Making them easily attainable (I.e., realistic) will provide you with the small wins needed to keep you motivated and moving forward.
You personal goals should cover broad areas of your life. Financial goals...check. Relationship goals....check. Family goals....check. Attitude goals....check, check, check. Take your time to think about your large goals and how they impact the different areas of your life. Then trim them down to specify important, tangible, and meaningful goals that you truly hope to accomplish.
Use your brain
Your goals should be SMART, like you. Goal of riding a blue unicorn into the sunset? Probably not going to happen. Goal of learning to ride track horses over the next 3 years? You can probably make that happen.
S - specific
M - meaningful/measurable
A - attainable/action-oriented
R - relevant and rewarding
T - time-bound/trackable
Try to make your goals as specific as possible. Be sure to give yourself deadlines and track progress towards the end result. These tricks help you stay motivated and gives you smaller accomplishments towards your ultimate goal. For example, instead of "take a trip around the world" as a goal, try something like "sail on a 6-month long cruise by December 31st, 2029. There will be several stages of prep and things that need to be accomplished to hit that goal. Giving yourself a deadline increases the chances that those things happen.
Achieving Goals
It's time to rejoice in your accomplishments with each goal you meet. Process the small victories and reflect on how your win helped you reach your larger goals. If the goal was too easy to achieve, make the next one more difficult. If the goal was significant and meaningful, ensure to celebrate appropriately. Learned something new about yourself? Adjust your other goals accordingly. Remember, you want to set yourself up for success. When you achieve it, it's ok to enjoy it.
